Rockwool and coir physical characteristics will affect plant growth due to the retention of water that creates pockets of anaerobic conditions plus allowing for ease of accumulation of nutrient ions in solution leading eventually to the formation of precipitates of calcium phosphate and sulfate. Therefore, plant nutrient element insufficiencies are likely to occur. With the use of these 2 rooting media, greater attention is needed to minimize both water and ion retention by careful selection of the nutrient solution formulation to match the plant requirements as well as the selection of the applied use factors.
